The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPC) has reported a massive rise in the ‘mummy makeover,’ which is when new mothers turn to plastic surgery in an attempt to transform their post-pregnancy body. Last year, more than 325,000 new mums had surgery in the USA, and now, new mothers throughout Britain are following suit.
A recent survey by Mother and Baby magazine indicated that a number of British mothers were unhappy with their body after pregnancy. The results showed that 50% of their readers would ‘consider surgery’, while a massive 25% would ‘definitely have surgery.’
Angelica Kavouni, a Harley Street doctor, specialises in “cosmetic solutions for modern motherhood.” A mother of two, Kavouni had a breast lift after giving birth to her children and now helps many other new mothers get their pre-pregnancy bodies back. According to Kavouni, the post-baby body offers two main problems: loose skin on the stomach and drooping breasts. Although using surgery to treat these problem areas is a drastic solution, Kavouni believes that women have the right to choose it. She said: “Of course, you don’t have to have it done, you don’t have to wear a bikini again – but why shouldn’t you?”
Some critics have slammed mothers that have surgery to get back to their pre-baby body, stating that new mothers should wear their lumps and bumps like a “badge of honour.” However, Orlaith McAllister, a model and former Big Brother contestant, is glad that she decided to have surgery six months after giving birth to her daughter, Eva. She said: “I’d been through all that pain and I just wanted to enjoy my body again.”
The most popular surgical procedures for new mums in the UK are Smartlipo, breast lifts and tummy tucks.
