Question by Megan: Ideas for casting “The Taming of the Shrew”?
I have this assignment where I’m supposed to be producing a modern version of The Taming of the Shrew. The part I’m having problems with is casting it. I don’t watch all that many movies so I’m not very familiar with actors. This is what I have so far:
Kate: Kiera Knightley or Angelina Jolie, probably Kiera Knightley
Bianca: Kelly Reilly
Lucentio: Orlando Bloom
Hortensio: Tom Hollander
Baptista: Donald Sutherland, perhaps?
Now these are the ones I have left and have no idea how to cast.
Petruchio
Grumio
Gremio
Tranio
Can anyone gives me some suggestions for these characters? Especially Petruchio?????
As you can tell from the cast I’ve already chosen, I’m taking a slightly more serious, less comic approach to this than some might. So it’d be great if there are any more serious actors that’d work.

David Tennant would make an excellent Petruchio.
Lee Evans for Grumio (he has already played a comic support to David Tennant).
Gremio needs to be old enough to be out of the serious running for Bianca’s hand, but young enough that he can pretend to himself that he is still a serious suitor. What about Antonio Banderas?
Tranio needs to be the kind of actor who can hang around invisibly in most of the scenes, but still step up to fill an important role unexpectedly. Stanley Tucci would be my first choice.
