Question by me, myself, and I: Are there any Katherine Jenkins fans/haters here? Howcome so many people seem to hate her?
Okay first of all, I’m NOT a fan of Katherine Jenkins. But I do like opera & classical music, although I dunno much about it. I’m not an opera/classical music expert nor do I have a background in music.
Anyway I notice that many people esp. from the opera world seem to really hate Katherine jenkins. Many said negative comments when she signed the largest record deal in UK classical recording history. Critics even called her “the worst opera singer wannabe”. Wow! Is she really that bad? Am I missing something here?
I saw her performance a few times on TV and to me she wasn’t that bad. Definitely not the best but I wouldn’t call her bad either. But then again, as I previously admitted, I’m not an expert so who am I to judge that.
Why is that so many people seem to hate her? What’s wrong with her? Is she really that bad?
Is it bcoz of her “unconventional” look (pretty, skinny & doesn’t look anything like the typical big-framed opera singers)? Does this mean that in order to become a great opera singer & win accolade & recognition from fellow peers, u have to be big-framed as well?
P.S: I’m not trying to defend Jenkins nor am I looking for some justification for her. I don’t wanna create a catfight either. I’m asking bcoz I simply wanna know. That’s all! I know that my questions may show my ignorance but the truth is I really don’t know. So I would really appreciate if u can reply nicely. Thanx in advance…
Thank u del-icio, I really like ur answer. I’m asking this question not bcoz I like Katherine Jenkins. It’s just that everywhere I go online in any forums, messageboards, youtube etc, I always read negative things about her esp from the people who consider themselves opera lovers/experts.
Btw yes I am aware of the fact that Katherine Jenkins doesn’t sing opera. Perhaps the correct term is classical singing rather than opera.
And about big-framed singers, it’s not that I think singers must be big-framed. It’s just that I notice among the “opera lovers/experts”, I get the impression that they kinda underestimate the (pretty) skinny singers compared to the big ones. Like Anna Netrebko. I dunno if it’s just out of jealousy or is it really bcoz she’s not that good. Oh and I also notice that most skinny/petite singers are usually lyric/coloratura singers. I’ve never heard/seen a slender singer with dramatic voices. Perhaps their small frames are not cut out for big dramatic voices?

She has a good voice, but is a creature of media hype. She has never, to my knowledge, ever acted in an opera. I am not sure that she could. She is a popular singer who happens to sing a few well known operatic arias. Just like Haley Westenra..

Just a few years back Katherine Jenkins was a public school music teacher in Wales. Today, she is the UK’s fastest-rising classical star. Ever since she shattered a glass chandelier with a high note during a concert, Katherine has taken the classical world by storm, winning several singing competitions at the Royal Academy of Music. Her debut album Première went straight to number one in the U.K in April 2004 and stayed there for eight weeks. Katherine’s second album, Second Nature was released
