Question by John Doe: Why is it considered so noble and so “patriotic” to die for your country?
“Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who have had the fortune of being born on some particular spot consider themselves nobler, better, grander, more intelligent than those living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all the others. The inhabitants of the other spots reason in like manner, of course, with the result that from early infancy the mind of the child is provided with blood-curdling stories about the Germans, the French, the Italians, Russians, etc. When the child has reached manhood he is thoroughly saturated with the belief that he is chosen by the Lord himself to defend his country against the attack or invasion of any foreigner. It is for that purpose that we are clamoring for a greater army and navy, more battleships and ammunition. An army and navy represent the people’s toys.”

You’re just another one who believes in dying over a piece of land. I don’t care what my forefathers gave me. They were a bunch of slave owning racists anyways.

I do not consider myself a philosopher, just someone who is curious. “PEACE THROUGH SUPERIOR FIREPOWER” is exactly what is wrong with the United States. The United States already spends more than any other country in the world and more than the top 10 spenders in NATO. Leo Tolstoy, the greatest anti-patriot of our time, defines patriotism as the principle that will justify the training of wholesale murderers.

If you honestly believe we live in a “classless society” then you need to take your blinders off. Anyone can see we still have classes. Go to the ghettos of New Orleans and then the houses of Hollywood stars. Of course the poor go to war because how else are they going to make money in such a competitive job market and the highest unemployment since the Great Depression.
@PARTSGUY
Who are you afraid of? Why is it we are going to spend 0 billion on an entirely new line of F-35′s when we are so poor as a nation? Why do we need 2,456 planes for the United States and our allies? What air force do we need to fight that necessitates an entirely new fighter when the F-22 Raptor is already by far the most deadly fighter in the sky? Are Iraqi suicide bombers, the Taliban or al-Qaeda going to suddenly going to spring up an air force that rivals the United States air force? Since the 9/11 attacks, the only thing these nimrods have come up with is to put small explosives in their underwear and their shoes. Are you really that scared of them? Instead of spending 0 billion on fighters perhaps we should spend it on something we REALLY need like oh say, job creation since approximately 1 in 10 Americans are out of the job. You need to check your own logic.

Oh? Is that what they’re calling “stupid and gullible” now?
For a reasoned opinion on “dying for your country”, I highly recommend reading “The True Believer”, by Eric Hoffer.
Love your quote, by the way.
